Find a Lost Pet

There is nothing as terrifying as the thought of a lost or missing pet. No matter how diligent, most pet guardians will find themselves faced with a missing pet at some point in their lives. Guardians who take immediate action have a greater chance of locating their missing pet.

Please do not wait – the wait and see philosophy often reduces the chances of your pet returning home safely. Linn County and the City of Cedar Rapids require shelters to hold stray animals for 3 and 5 days respectively. Shelters can hold stray animals longer, provided there is space to house them. If your pet is missing, immediately take the following steps:

  • File a Lost Report with both Cedar Valley Humane Society and Cedar Rapids Animal Control. We are independent agencies – a report must be filed with both agencies. Be prepared to accurately describe your pet. If your dog is a German Shepherd/ Lab mix who looks like a hound, make sure the person taking the report understands. Call the CVHS at 319-362-6288 and CRAC at 319-286-5993. Follow-up this verbal report with a visit to both agencies. Ask to tour each facility to personally view all the animals in their care.
  • Advise your local law enforcement agency. If you live in Linn County, Marion, Robins, Hiawatha or other small community, make sure the authorities are aware your pet is missing. These agencies work closely with the CVHS but will only know you are missing your pet if you tell them.
  • Signage – Get posters with your pet’s photo posted throughout your neighborhood. Be sure to include your name and phone number(s). Download the CVHS Lost Dog ( 27 KB ) / Lost Cat ( 27 KB ) Posters from our website.
  • Talk – talk – talk – talk – talk. Don’t be shy – get the word out. Talk to neighbors, businesses in your community, delivery people, your mail carrier. If you live in a small community, get in touch with the local bank, gas station, post office, even town hall. The more people who are aware of the situation, the more people will be able to help you find your missing pet.

Continue to contact the CVHS and CRAC daily regarding your pet’s disappearance. Phone or stop in to view the stray kennels as often as possible.
