Thinking about adopting a pet?  WONDERFUL!  But before you come out to the shelter to meet all the great animals in need of new homes, please consider the following:

Why do you want a pet? Reasons such as: you want to teach your child responsibility, it’s “the thing to do”, or the kids have been pining for a kitten or puppy, all usually end up big mistakes.  Pets may be with you 10, 15 or even 20 loving years – this is a long-term commitment, not a passing fad.

Do you have time for a pet? Pets can’t be ignored because you or your children are tired or busy.  They require food, water, exercise, care, and companionship every day.  Many animals are in our shelter because their owners did not realize how much time it takes to properly care for a pet.  Pet care should always be provided by an adult, or closely supervised by an adult if the care has become a child’s responsibility.

Can you afford a pet? The cost of food and proper routine vet care can become expensive.   Your pet may become sick or injured – can you provide the care needed to nurse them back to health?

Is anyone in your home allergic to pets? You can avoid heartaches in your household by determining ahead of time if any members are allergic to the breed you pick. We have many pets in our shelter because allergies were not considered before a purchase.

Are you allowed to have a pet? The time to find out if your landlord allows animals is before you begin searching for a new pet. If you move a lot and/or rent, a dog or cat might not be a good choice.

Are your children six years or older? Having young children in your household imposes some restrictions on the kind of pet that is suitable for your family.  Educate yourself on the different breeds so that you pick wisely.  If you choose a puppy or kitten, children need to be taught how to interact with this new addition to your family.  An adult should always be present when a young child plays with any type of pet.

Is your family situation a stable one? Pets are entitled to permanent homes.  Future career moves may make having a pet difficult.  Young couples should consider pets and any future children as equally important aspects of family planning.

Now that you’ve done your research and satisfactorily considered the above, come visit our pets. There is sure to be a companion who will reward you with years of love, companionship and loyalty. Your pet is eagerly awaiting you and will probably spot you the minute you walk through the door!
